FREE VIDEO: Up close with the Stone of Destiny
I talk about the new home for Scotland's most famous lump of sandstone
Today I have a video for you about an icon of Scottish nationhood: the Stone of Destiny. Yes, it’s just me bumping my gums on camera. Hope you like it. Let me know what you think.

One thing I meant to mention. There is a dearth of Stone of Destiny merchandise in the museum shop. You cannot buy a Stone of Destiny keyring or a Stone of Destiny cushion or a Stone of Destiny made of chocolate. Nothing.
Is this deliberate? Do the curators worry it would be disrespectful? Or is it just because the museum is new and the lead-in times for such merchandise is long?
I should also have mentioned: there’s a tremendous temporary exhibition at the museum about unicorns. This is such a great subject I am amazed it has not been done before.
The unicorn exhibition gathers some impressive artworks and sculptures from across Europe and explores how the mythical beast came to be associated with Scotland and the Scottish crown. You can still find a unicorn atop the merchant cross in most Scottish towns and cities.
Supplementing this history is a lovely array of kids’ unicorn toys and LGBT paraphernalia, as well as some modern art commissioned for the exhibition on a unicorn theme.
This felt very contemporary and was not, frankly, what I was expecting in douce Perth. Then again, that is maybe just my Dundonian prejudice kicking in.
If you are planning a visit to Perth, don’t forget Perth Art Gallery, with its celebration of the works (and lives) of JD Ferguson and Margaret Morris, the golden couple of early 20th century Scottish art.
Or should I say one of the golden couples. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald must be pretty strong contenders.
Final note: They were sold out of scones at the Stone cafe that should be called the Scone cafe. Bummer. I had a whole Abbott and Costello routine planned along the lines of “is that a scone or a scone?”.
Actually, probably just as well.
